This week marks the start of the 2012 football season. Fans everywhere are gearing up to support their team on the way to the playoffs and to the Super Bowl. Most everyone knows of someone who currently plays or used to play football, either for school or as an extracurricular activity.

The physical nature of football means that collisions, blocks, and falls happen multiple times during the course of a 60-minute game. Athletes who play football know these risks going in and choose to play because they love the game. Concussions, sprained ligaments, and damage to the back and neck are common injuries that many football players will experience at some point.

Between 2001 and 2005, U.S. males of all ages made an estimated 1,060,823 emergency room visits with football-related injuries, according to an analysis of data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System-All Injury Program performed by the Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital. The results, reported in the March 2009 issue of the journal “Academic Emergency Medicine,” showed that for boys 7 to 11, 29 percent presented with fractures or dislocations and 27 percent with sprains or strains. In the 12-to-17-year-old age group, 31 percent presented with sprains or strains and 29 percent with fractures or dislocations.

Chiropractic cannot prevent damage from being done but it can undo the damage that is caused from multiple impacts. Along with proper stretching, nutrition, hydration, and conditioning, chiropractic can be a valuable tool to repair the damage done by the physical forces of football. If chiropractic can help a football player who is banged up, imagine what you can achieve with a body that does not sustain this kind of damage!

If you know someone in your life that currently plays or used to play football, please have them contact our office so we can evaluate their spine and nervous system to see if we can help them lead a healthier life.

In time, with regular chiropractic care, the body will be strong enough to reset some of the damage on its own, so the need to come in and be adjusted is less. At Tishman Chiropractic Centre we will get you going, not keep you coming!
